7 Rules How to Treat a Rape Victim
- First of all trust her words. One of the biggest fears rape-victims have - is they are scared that no one will believe them. Believe everything she tells, not depending to hers or the rapist’s reputation or her behavior. And don’t try to accuse the victim.
- Listen to her carefully. Let her tell you her story in the manner she prefers, don’t hurry her. If the rape-victim keeps silence, probably she simply needs someone to sit with her while she gathers strength to speak up. Be patient and wait until she’s ready to talk.
- Insure her, that it’s not her fault that it happened to her. Try not to ask questions like “Why did this happen?” She might think that you’re accusing her. If she’s blaming herself, then let her speak out and then help her understand that it’s not her fault it happened to her.
- Try to convince a victim to file a report about the raping to the police and save the evidence. The faster she files a report, the more chances that the police will catch the rapist. The raped shall not take a shower; brush her teeth or take of her clothes until a doctor examines her.
- Try to convince the a victim to get medical help. It’s possible that she might have gotten some venereal disease or internal injuries. Besides that, the abuse could have also caused unwanted pregnancy. Even those women who where raped a while ago should get checked for venereal diseases because the symptoms aren’t always visible via the primary examination.
- Offer your help as a psychoanalyst or convince to get help from organizations offering help to rape victims. She doesn’t need to file a report to the police when requesting such help. A consultation will give her psychological support which is very much needed during critical hours after the raping.
- Offer her alternative ways of acting, but convince her that it’s up to her what the decision she will take. Let the victim feel that she has control over the situation. Do everything to help her to get better but don’t express your point of view about her actions. In case if she decides not to file a report to the police, support her actions, even if you don’t agree with them.
